A collaborative approach to coaching

The process of coaching is a tricky one to explain. For all the training and science behind the methods, there is a slightly mystical element to how it works and what the outcomes are. It's as though the process of coaching is unexplainably more than the sum of its parts. For me, the most important aspect of coaching is that this is a partnership between coach and client. The coach is not an expert in life, or on the client, so the client partners with the coach to explore their thinking, their reality and their journey towards whatever inner or external goals are important.
Coaching can be seen as:
-
A deep processes to help you identify where you are limiting yourself, and to move past these internal limits so that you can transform your life
-
A mixture of powerful cognitive, emotional and somatic approaches to bring you fresh perspective, let go of what no longer serves you and move forward with new skills and insight
-
A safe space to share and be heard without judgement
-
Practical and effective evidence based approaches
-
Tools that you can take away and use for yourself to accelerate your growth
Being, doing, having
We often spend our lives thinking about what we have, don't have or want to have. When we spend so much time and mental energy with the "having" we are not present to what we are doing or how we are being. Focusing on what we are doing can help us to achieve what we want to have, but it also means that we are avoiding or ignoring how we are. The most powerful place to put our awareness is on how we are being. How we are being automatically leads to what we do, which automatically leads to what we will have. The diagram below shows the flow people often have from having to doing to being with the dashed lines. The solid lines show how our being, informs our doing and having. The line from having to being indicates the process of setting an intention based on a consideration of where we want to be or what we want to have in our life. However, it is more powerful and effective when this is not our focus, but something we consider from time to time.

Live with purpose, direction and fulfilment
You will explore your life and work purpose using a combination of a well established and tailored process that has the freedom to unfold in whatever way works best for you. This allows us to co-create a coaching experience to your needs and objectives. At the same time, with structured support we are efficient with your time to support your transformation and growth. The coaching can to cover all aspects of your life, personal and professional. As you grow as a human being, becoming more self-aware and better resourced, everything else with become clearer and more achievable in your life and work.

Working with perspectives
Being able to explore multiple perspectives, holding the paradox of multiple truths, exploring opposites and polarities through flexibility of mind provides a powerful way to work through life's challenges and potential opportunities. This includes the ability to get psychological distance from our emotions and thoughts, so that we can be open to new ways of making meaning of the world. The following are a few examples of how both "this" and "that" can be true, at the same time. Through coaching, you will learn to apply this flexibility to your own mind and to your own situation.

Achieving your goals

The GROW model was developed in the 1980's by Sir John Whitmore, and yet it still offers one of the best frameworks to move from where we are now to where we need or want to be. By taking the time to move back and forward through the process, and by including additional the additional aspects of Blockers - "what might get in your way" and Review - "assessing progress and tweaking", we can work together to bring you towards your chosen future.
Getting to know your psyche

IFS was originally developed for therapy, it has become popular in coaching too. It provides a powerful way to understand our actions and reactions in any situation, and to work with our self to find more effectives ways to act and react.

There are many different methods that integrate parts work, such as Internal Family Systems, Voice Dialogue, gestalt etc. The idea, which is now supported through a great deal of research, is that we are not ever a single personality, but a multiplicity of different parts. Our parts show up with differing intensities and in different combinations depending on what is happening to us - our context or triggers. Each part has a role to play, and is often trying to protect the deeper, more vulnerable parts of our personality.
As we learn to be more in our self-energy / authentic self, we are able to be curious about our parts. From there we are able to understand them, help them to feel safe, and to integrate them into our whole. This approach doesn't try to push parts away, or ignore them, or to let go of their distinctions. The aim is to be able to hold the complexity and polarity of all our parts. There is a lot of wisdom in our parts, the problem comes when they take over the whole show.

Working with your nervous system

Polyvagal theory gives us a way to understand how we react to perceived threat in our environment, or within our own thoughts. Knowing where we are using the ladder metaphor is key to catching our unhelpful inner and outer reactions. There are specific ways to manage our nervous system depending on where we are. For example when we are collapsed, it will help us to get into action. When we are agitated it will help to use grounding and other techniques to move us back to ventral vagal activation at the top of the ladder. This approach is also very helpful when working with difficult memories or situations, and is key for effective communication!
Personality and shadow work
Discover powerful tools (such as the Enneagram) for self-awareness, understanding and growth! Understand yourself better to bring about personal growth, improved relationships, more effective communication and inner peace. Unlock your inner power and release your true potential. Who am I? What is my potential and what is holding me back? Why do I seem to self-sabotage my own good intentions so often? How can I create the changes I dream of in myself, my life and my work? Around the world, right now, thousands of people are grappling with these questions. Take a deeper dive using powerful structures to navigate these deeper questions that will open you up to a more effective way of living and being in the world.

Core beliefs and re-writing your own stories

Deep in our psyche are what we can think of as our core beliefs. These are beliefs about who we are, how the world is, how we are perceived by others, what is good / bad or right / wrong, how we get love, whether we are worthy, how to belong etc. These core beliefs affect what is important to us, how we think and how we behave or respond to situations, feelings, thoughts and other people. At certain points in our life, these core beliefs may become unhelpful to our own wellbeing, or to what we want to achieve in our life. At these points we can do the deep work to understand our unique core beliefs, which are deep in our unconscious. This work means rewriting the story of who we are, how the world is, and what is important.
Mental wellbeing and life balance
Coaching is a powerful way for you to develop your mental and emotional wellbeing. Whether you feel that you are in crisis, or simply not as happy as you want to be, I will help you to feel safe. I bring a balance of listening, support and practical help. I have been trained in trauma awareness and working with mental health. My approach draws on a wide range of methods, approaches and tools to help you find your balance and positive outlook again in life.
Coaching is not a replacement for counselling or psychotherapy, which may be better adapted to certain people and situations. In my experience, the two can sit alongside each other, and sometimes it is better to focus on on approach at a time. This is something we can discuss and review initially and on an ongoing basis.
Career Transition
Our careers are such an important part of our lives. As part of life transitions and our general wellbeing, having a career that meets your needs and provides fulfilment is a great goal. To achieve this, we can use a combination of approaches in our work together to awaken, access and empower the parts of you that will fuel your growth. It may be time for you to find a way to live and work in a way that is deeply satisfying and rewarding. I bring creativity and balance to career coaching, as well as a number of tailored approaches.
